If you spread your company too thin, you and your team will partially do things instead of fully doing a few key chunks that actually produce value for your company. It's important to look for criteria that are as objectively and quantitatively measurable as possible. It becomes a clear accountability tool and GPS to ensure your team is focusing on the right things and hitting the key milestones on time. As you limit your Action Plan to one page, pick three or four definite criteria of success for each Focus Area and include one key performance indicator KPI to track. In fact, in order to successfully scale your company requires that you balance the need to holding a firm focus on those fewer, better things that will make a leveraged difference for your company and your need to maintain your flexibility so you can adjust as you go. So, here are a few tips: Write down goals that you need to accomplish in the next 13 weeks Carefully rewrite the goals into the SMART format. And with your plan being 1-page, you and your team can take it in with one look. Enlist a colleague to hold you accountable and go to work on attaining your goals. Instead, pause and clarify your criteria of success within each Focus Area.

If you have a clear understanding of what your goal is, and then apply strategies and tactics to accomplish the goal, amazing achievements will be attained. This is what it should look like. It just works. This sense of ownership is critical to your success.

On one side of the equation you have to balance the need for flexibility--markets change, opportunities appear, and tactics succeed or fail. While your plan must be detailed enough to guide your actions, it must not be so detailed that you feel overwhelmed or lose yourself in the minutia. What can you actually observe and measure that will signal your success? Essentially, you have to balance making sure your action plan can be adapted for the changing circumstances of your marketplace, and the high cost in lost momentum and frustrated team if you change your company's focus too frequently. This one-page quarterly plan allows you to see what your goals are for the year and the next five years, but more importantly, what you need to do in the next three months to move you toward those larger goals. Your written criteria of success for each Focus Area give you a yardstick against which to measure progress as you go.
